The Bay Area Black Worker Center is hiring an Executive Director!

The mission of the Bay Area Black Worker Center (BABWC) is to eliminate Black poverty by increasing access to quality jobs, improving the quality of jobs in those industries that employ Black workers, and reducing employment discrimination against Black workers.

The BABWC develops organized power and authentic grassroots leadership among Black workers (unionized, nonunion, immigrant, formerly incarcerated, youth, and the unemployed) and the extended community. The center's key strategies are leadership development of workers, research, organizing, and building strategic alliances between the Bay Area labor movement and the Black community. As a result of its activities, the BABWC seeks to promote economic and racial justice, peace, and prosperity for the Bay Area by eliminating poverty-wage employment and developing policies and corporate practices that perpetuate equality in the labor market.



Qualifications:

We are looking for a visionary leader who is excited about building the organization from the ground up. Someone who comes from a long history of organizing and organizational development and fundraising. Due to several years of transition, BAWC is at a foundational place and looking for someone who is excited about the opportunity to rebuild a critical movement organization.

  • Visionary Leadership/Organizational Planning:Ensure BABWC has a long-range strategy aligned with its mission to identify and explore new ideas and opportunities, create new programs aligned with the mission and long-range strategy as opportunities arise; and leads annual and strategic planning. Engage staff and BABWC member leaders in Strategic and Annual Planning.Coordinates committee to lead staff and leaders political education series that may include book club, movies, dialogues, discussions and/or trainings. Plan mid-year and end of year planning and retreats and other critical all staff discussions as needed.Lead process to establish and /or strengthen leadership bodies of the BABWC (i.e. committee structures, steering or coordinating committee, advisory board).




  • Fundraising:Ensure that BABWC maintains a diverse and sustainable funding base; establishes and maintains relationships with funders and donors; cultivates new funding sources; and ensures that grant commitments are met.Meet all fundraising deadlines, while engaging program staff in grant proposals and reports.Build relationships with 5-7 program officers (Akonadi, San Francisco Foundation, Y&H Soda, The California Endowment, Common Counsel, Irvine, others). Identify and cultivate new funder prospects and relationships. Explore large contributions with union partners.

  • Organizational Relationships:Serves as an effective spokesperson for BABWC with other institutions and the general public; proactively positions BABWC and advances its reputation in the fields in which it works. Support 1400 Jobs Campaign to victory on implementation with Alameda County as well as engaging additional public and private sector employers to make similar commitments to hiring workers who have felony convictions. Strengthen and deepen 6-8 key organizational relationships including Alameda Labor Council, SEIU 1021, Urban Peace Movement, OCO, National Employment Law Project, UNITE HERE 2850, Chinese for Progressive Action, the National Black Worker Center.Identify and cultivate new relationships in SF including SF Labor Council (?), UNITE HERE Local 2,Jobs with Justice, SEIU 1021, SEIU USWW




  • Staff Development:Attract, retain and motivate a staff of top quality people; ensures that staff members receive the evaluation, training, support and supervision that they need to succeed; and divides and assigns work effectively. Ensure all staff has annual evaluations, focused leadership development plans and benchmarks, program and individual work plans, and current job descriptions.

  • Administration:Ensure the organizational, operational, legal and financial health and effectiveness of the organization.Strengthen own knowledge of financial systems and understanding reports. Oversee organizational budget and managing overall income and expense implications.




  • Campaign and Program Alignment: Ensures programs and campaigns are coordinated and build upon one another. Supports campaign strategy and development.




  • Fiscal Sponsor Relationship:BABWC is a fiscally sponsored project of the Movement Strategy Center (MSC). ED will work directly with MSC staff to review BABWC financials on a monthly basis, will advise MSC of any changes to staffing, and will work to ensure that all staff understands MSC policies and protocols. MSC will provide HR support to BABWC. ED will ensure that BABWC and MSC are fulfilling responsibilities as outlined in the MOU between the two parties.




  • BABWC Leadership Body:Currently Danielle Mahones and Steven Pitts are BABWC advisors who will support the Executive Director. As a fiscally sponsored project, the BABWC is not required to have a board but has an advisory board that provides more traditional support to the organization in areas of fundraising and organizational development.
