Stanford University

Job Number:
86117

Business Title: Associate Director of Communications for Student Health and Well-being
Department: Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs
Appointment Duration: Three year fixed term from the hire date

Stanford University has an immediate opening for an Associate Director of Communications for Student Health and Well-being. This position will be in the Division of Student Affairs, which supports many student experiences outside the classroom in our residences, community centers, student organizations, health center, career education center, and more.

We are making significant changes on campus to positively affect the health and well-being of Stanford students and better support their learning experience. The university is adding new resources both to augment and enhance existing services and to develop and revise our programs in response to the evolving needs of students. However, we continue to hear from students that they don't fully understand what resources are already available and how to access them, how they can find relevant campus information online, and how they can participate in the development of responsive student services.

The university is seeking a well-rounded and experienced professional communicator to create and implement effective communications strategies and tactics to raise student awareness of these new and continuing health and well-being campus resources. This person will have demonstrated experience, judgment, and skills to work successfully with a young audience.

This is a new three-year, fixed-term, full-time position in the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs reporting to the Communications Director. Working with senior management and other staff, the Associate Director will partner with multiple VPSA units and offices including the Centers for Equity, Community and Leadership, Dean of Students Office, Graduate Life Office, Residential Education, and Vaden Health Center.

In addition, this Associate Director will support broader VPSA communications objectives, including executive communications, media relations, and digital communications, in collaboration with relevant university-wide offices to advance Our Most Important Work.

Inclusion and diversity are integral to our commitment to excellence. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students from diverse backgrounds, or incorporating diverse perspectives in their work.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and implement innovative marketing campaigns to meet Stanford's objectives for student health and well-being, including print and digital materials as well as other methods suitable for reaching college students.
  • Conduct a campus listening tour to identify communications objectives, messages, audiences and goals in order to inform the design of marketing methods and materials, and to fine-tune existing practices.
  • Conduct market research, to include reporting on similar campaigns at peer institutions, and use this benchmarking to inform Stanford's communications strategies.
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing communications strategy with a focus on digital channels to help students navigate available resources.
  • Develop and produce informational tools that can be provided to individual students on specific topics.
  • Plan and execute events supporting student health and well-being.
  • Analyze campaign effectiveness, and recommend adjustments to marketing strategies.
  • Build sustainable systems that will advance the work of this position after the term of the position ends.
  • Assist with VPSA executive communications, media relations, and digital communications as assigned.
  • Collaborate with VPSA colleagues, campus partners, consultants, and vendors.
  • Manage project/program budget(s) and coordinate invoice processing.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, public health, health education, or related fields; at least five years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills suitable for reaching audiences ranging from students to senior leadership.
  • Strong computer skills including web and graphic design skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing multi-platform marketing campaigns in collaboration with business partners.
  • Understands how to implement integrated marketing programs across channels including digital and print.
  • Experience driving cross-functional groups toward a common goal and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience engaging with and thriving among a wide variety of stakeholders, sensitivity to social justice and diversity, and knowledge of inclusive communications practices.
  • Experience with market research and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

In addition, our preferred qualifications include:
Experience communicating mental health and well-being information to university populations, especially Generation Z.
