Finding an internship can be stressful. When I first started
looking for an internship I was overwhelmed with the amount of things to keep
in mind. I had so many questions. Where do I go to find an internship? Who
should I talk to? Don’t worry; you’re not the only one. With the economy right
now it’s a little harder to find an internship, but you just have to be patient
and allow for some time to find the internship you’re looking for.
A key thing to keep in mind when searching for an internship
is to use all your resources. Ask others where they found their internship and see
if they have any suggestions. I personally networked with other students in my
department at school to see where they had done theirs, what the process was and
what tasks they were in charge of. You can also ask friends and family members
for suggestions from people they know. Networking is key: It doesn’t hurt to try
Take advantage of your career center or department office on
campus. Create an account where you can post your resume and cover letter for
companies to view. From there you should be able to search for internship
postings. You should check twice a week for new postings or the statues of your
resume. Provide all your information for companies to contact you and make sure
that your email address is workplace appropriate, for example, use your name
rather than babygirl.
Also try to attend job fairs on campus to network with
companies. Dress to impress and bring your resume. Don’t be afraid to stop at a
table and ask questions.
Finally you should check out job boards on the internet to find
local postings. Upload your resume every opportunity you get. Apply to all
positions that interest you. There are never too many. One thing I can suggest
to decide whether you want to apply for an internship or not is to visit the
companies web site. Click around the site and see if the company is a place you
would like to work. Find out more about the company. Does it look like
somewhere you will be happy? If not, I would suggest looking at your other
Good luck with your internship search!
