Stanford University, situated in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley is one of the world’s leading universities in terms of both research andEducation. We currently have an immediate opening for a biological research specialist at the Computational and Functional Genomics Group located at Stanford’s Department of Developmental Biology.
The Bejerano lab (http://bejerano.stanford.edu/ ) is shared between Stanford’s Medical School Department of Developmental Biology, and the School of Engineering Computer Science Department. The Bejerano Lab focuses on understanding the complex cis-regulatory landscape of the Human Genome. We are engaged in exciting research projects in comparative and functional genomics, evo-devo (evolutionary developmental biology), and the study of human disease. The lab develops and relies heavily on computational tools to guide the experimental work done both in our own lab, and in collaborating labs. We seek a highly motivated individual to proactively expand and organize the information resources that empower our research.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Genome informatics specialist position includes the following job responsibilities: (1) Keep an up to date overview of projects in the Bejerano Lab. (2) Proactively acquire novel information resources to empower our work, from the current literature and public domain databases. (3) Digest acquired resources to our needs, and updates them periodically. (4) Reign over the proper integration of information produced by lab members into our general informatics framework. (5) Potential for additional open ended research into empowering scientific discovery based on public resources abounds. Individuals planning to later attend grad or med school will find the Training and knowledge this position provides invaluable. More advanced professionals are also very welcome, in which case accommodation of personal time constraints can be discussed.

Qualifications: A bachelors’ degree in Biology, computer science, related fields or the combination of both is required. A more advanced graduate degree is desired. Two to three years of experience is required. Incumbent must possess a broad foundation in Biology and the ability to enjoy and independently interpret the scientific literature, particularly in Genomics and related fields. Must have strong written and oral communication skills in English, as well as excellent interpersonal skills. Computer skills must include the ability to write code. A working knowledge of a text processing language (like python, perl, or awk) is highly desired. This individual must exercise considerable judgment, initiative and resourcefulness and work in an organized fashion.
