Specific Responsibilities:

Gilead Sciences is committed to supporting worldwide access to HIV and viral hepatitis therapies through a variety of innovative programs. International Access Operations (IAO) is operations infrastructure of the Gilead Access program, which serves over 130 resourced-challenged developing world countries by providing Gilead’s HIV and viral hepatitis products at reduced prices to the poorest of the poor. This program is conducted in part by establishing partnerships with regional distributors and by partnering with a number of Indian generic manufacturers.

The Foster City-based Associate/Director, Medical Affairs will join the IAO team reporting to the Medical Director of the group. He/she will disseminate medical, clinical and scientific information about Gilead’s innovative products and related disease states to regional thought leaders, local and community Healthcare professionals and country health ministries throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Programs are either independently driven by Gilead or are arranged in coordination with the medical staff of the distributors. The Associate/Director Medical Affairs will also interact with international stakeholders, agencies and public health organizations such as WHO, UNAIDS, MSF and Global Fund.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

Principle Roles and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
•Function as a key member of the Medical Affairs department within IAO serving as a medical expert resource for the areas of HIV, HBV and HCV therapeutics
•Together with the Medical Director, the Associate/Director will be responsible for planning, developing, preparing and delivering all medical-related activities and programs; these work products include but are not limited to conference presentations, advisory programs, medical Education programs, patient Education material, Training courses, promotional material and medical information documents. Activities will be supported by or in Support of IAO Regional Leads and in-country distribution partners
•Work with Regional Leads to develop and implement defined goals and objectives aligned with IAO’s strategic initiatives; cultivate and maintain relationships with infectious disease and liver disease medical communities as well as health authorities in Access markets (country CDC and MOH)
•Expand relationships with International KOLs from US, EU and other developed countries to bring together KOLs from high to low income countries for advisory board programs, conference symposiums, medical Education initiatives as well as investigator-initiated clinical studies in IA countries
•Develop and prepare timely, up-to-date and region-specific clinical and scientific presentations to Healthcare professionals, both proactively and in response to requests for information, consistent with promotional compliance and regulatory requirements
•Design, prepare and deliver Training programs in HIV, HBV and HCV to distributor partners
•Maintain IAO web portal with relevant and current information for use by the distribution partners
•Function as a key participant in the review of promotional materials
•Help present and/or publish scientific findings, including summarizing literature reports and conference proceedings, Support KOL collaboration and speaker training
•Work collaboratively across functional groups within Gilead including Medical Affairs, Commercial,Marketing, Clinical, Regulatory Affairs,Legal, and Corporate Affairs to accomplish the above

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

•Advanced degree in science or medicine required (MD, DO, or PhD)
•Experience in Pharmaceutical industry required; medical affairs experience highly preferred
•Clinical or work experience in HIV required; experience in viral hepatitis a plus
•Current and in-depth knowledge in treatment guidelines, clinical management, treatment options as well as controversies and challenges in HIV therapy required; familiarity with viral hepatitis is a plus
•Understanding of clinical landscape in resource-limiting setting is a plus
•Capacity to develop and deliver high-quality, scientifically accurate and credible presentations essential
•Multi-lingual skill strongly preferred

•Excellent project management, problem solving and organizational skills, including the management of multiple priorities and resources
•Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment
•Affinity for a collaborative, team-oriented environment and approach; ability to network and partner with internal and external stakeholders, including medical thought leaders, regional distributors, academic institutions, large group practices, medical directors and pharmacy directors and other members of the Healthcare team.
•Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills required; language proficiency a plus
•Ability to travel 20-30% of the time
