Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt. Appointee serves at the pleasure of the appointing officer for a maximum duration of three (3) years.

Additional temporary and/or permanent positions may be created in future to Support the Citys 10-year Sewer System Improvement Program. Candidates hired through this announcement will be eligible to apply for those future positions.

The San Francisco Department of Public Works, Infrastructure Division is seeking two self-motivated and energetic Civil Engineers to join our multi-discipline engineering Division.

Minimum to qualify

Candidates must possess minimum five (5) years of verifiable professional civil engineering experience, which includes two (2) years experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5207 Associate Civil Engineer position; and possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in civil engineering.

The Engineer shall possess a valid Class C drivers license.

Desirable experience:

Minimum 10 years of experience in planning, design and Construction of wastewater collection system projects.

Knowledge of mathematic hydraulic modeling for storm or combined sewer system.

Experience in planning and design of low impact Design Improvement projects.

Asset management of utilities and GIS mapping experience will be preferred but not required.

Job Description:

The Civil Engineer will perform difficult and responsible professional engineering work and lead a group of engineering personnel, including consultants, engaged in planning, design and Construction of waste water collection system replacement, rehabilitation and improvement projects. The essential functions of the Civil Engineer include: analyzing workloads and budgets, and selecting, training, motivating, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff; assigning work and determining resources necessary to complete assigned work; reviewing and analyzing bids; negotiating and modifying contracts and resolving claims and disputes; advising operations staff in wastewater collection system functions and system optimization; supervising and reviewing preparation of technical engineering reports and other documentations, designs, drawings, specifications, cost and quantity estimates; performing and reviewing preparation of hydraulic analysis; providing engineering Support to Construction management staff; reviewing existing conditions and performing complex technical engineering studies; writing, reviewing and approving departmental correspondence, reports and other related documents; and conducting meetings and making presentations to staff, committees, approval agencies, clients and the general public. The work frequently requires interpretation of regulations, laws, policies, procedures, guidelines and standards, and utilizing them in preparation of technical documents.

The Civil Engineer position requires knowledge of waste water collection system, its functional and operational needs, knowledge in preparation of technical engineering analysis/reports and design of waste water collection systemFacilities, and construction. The Civil Engineer shall possess the ability to communicate with public, management, clients and other governmental and private agencies; knowledge of Computer applications and software programs used in performing hydraulic modeling, and creating management and other reports; use independent judgment within established policies; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
